For the first year, maximum of THIRTY interested 8th grade, female students will be selected to participate. The girls will attend Geochicks once per week after school. During this time the students will be performing hands-on activities using technology or working on long term projects. The girls will also participate in after school field activities. Students will have opportunities to listen to guest speakers as well as travel to various field locations to see how things happen in different industries involving science. Some of the field activities involve travel to power plants, biomedical facilities, and state parks. All the lessons and field experiences will be led by one of the Bastrop Middle School science teachers with the help of community partners.
Middle School girls are energetic, full of questions, and eager to learn. Geochicks will provide a safe, science-filled environment to cultivate their interests and encourage them to continue on a path to success in science.
We are looking for community partners who could assist in any of the following ways:
- Female guest speakers (science/math/engineering careers)
- Authentic field work or projects that the girls can complete, collect data, etc in a real-world setting
- Locations for field trips (dams, power plants, biomedical, computer, parks)
- Help with hands-on activities
- provide power tools for the girls to use at least once throughout the year
- funding of any kind (supplies, transportation, t-shirts)
