Field Trip!

Our first field trip will be Friday, October 9th.  Permission slips will be due on Friday October 2nd.
We will be going to the Earth Science Career Fair at the JJ Pickle Research Campus branch of  the University of Texas.

Macroinvertebrate Study

After our workshop, we will be hiking the Barton Springs Greenbelt.  We will probably only get to the #4 on the trail map before we have to turn around...



Today's Activity:

Macroinvertebrates



Activity 1: 
Identify macroinvertebrates using the dichotomous key.
Each person should get 1 - 2 pictures of macroinvertebrates.
Click HERE to use the dichotomous key to identify the NAME YOUR ORGANISM.
Complete a Wanted Poster for the macroinvertebrate you picked.  (quickly - 5 minutes or less)

Activity 2:
Each person will present their macroinvertebrate poster!

Activity 3:
Find a partner and you will collect a fake samplings of organisms from the fake BMS pond (stream 1) and fake CCMS pond (stream 2).

Complete the Sample Record to find out if the water quality is POOR, FAIR, GOOD, or EXCELLENT depending on the types of organisms that live in the fake BMS  & CCMS ponds.

Google Earth Volcano Tour

Today you will create a tour of volcanic activity along plate boundaries.

Please make a tour of at least 5 places from the following locations.

Mt. Saint Helens, Washington
Kilauea, Hawaii
Mt. Fuji, Japan
Surtsey, Iceland
Mt. Moroto, Africa
Mt. Ubinas, Peru
Mt. Talakmau, Sumatra
Tacana, Guatemala
Krakatoa, Java
Santorini, Greece


For each location you need to put an information tag that tells the visitors to your tour interesting facts about the volcano.

We are planning a camping trip this spring!!

Please look at each site and decide which one looks the most interesting for our group to visit.  We will be spending 1 Saturday night there.  Depending on the amount of GeoChicks attending, we may need some parents to volunteer to go with us.  Getting a bus would be very expensive....
